BondingBox Startup Business Branding, Collateral, and Games
The Challenge
BondingBox started as a subscription box service designed to help busy couples with young children carve out quality time together. The product centered on activities and games built to spark real conversations and playful connection, not just another box of stuff.
Starting From a Weekend
The business launched out of Startup Weekend Iowa City in November 2015, where the founding team had 54 hours to develop and pitch the concept. The compressed timeline meant building a business model, researching the market, and preparing a pitch simultaneously under competition conditions.
Building the Brand from the Ground Up
After Startup Weekend, the company needed a complete creative identity. Early on the business operated under a different name before rebranding to BondingBox, which required developing new branding, collateral, and positioning from scratch while keeping the business running.
Sustaining Creative Output as a Small Team
With limited resources and no dedicated design staff, the creative and marketing work had to be produced in-house across branding, web, social media, print collateral, presentation materials, and game design over nearly a decade of operation.
The Solution
After Startup Weekend, I took on the design and marketing responsibilities for BondingBox, eventually becoming CEO and leading the company through a rebrand and years of continued operation.
Rebrand from Sexy Life to BondingBox
The original company name was Sexy Life. The rebrand to BondingBox required building a new identity that better reflected the product’s core values: family connection, quality time, and playful engagement. Branding, naming rationale, and visual identity were developed to support the pivot.
Pitch Decks and Investor Materials
I designed and maintained presentation materials to communicate the business opportunity to judges, partners, and potential supporters. The Agropolis deck shown in the gallery is one example of the polished presentation work produced post-Startup Weekend.
Full-Spectrum Creative Production
Across nearly a decade, the creative work covered:
- Brand identity and visual standards
- Website design and ecommerce development in WordPress
- Landing pages for testing market traction
- Social media campaigns including seasonal promotions
- Print collateral and marketing materials
- Game design for the BondingBox activity line and DateBuilder card game
- Branded team apparel
Operating as a Lean Creative Team
For most of the company’s life, design and marketing were handled without a dedicated agency or large team. A one-year intern supported some of the work, but the majority of creative output was produced in-house.
The Results
BondingBox ran for nearly a decade, generating real sales and building a creative body of work that spanned branding, games, web, print, and social media.
Startup Weekend Iowa City, 2015
The founding team won 1st place and the Judge’s Favorite award at Startup Weekend Iowa City in November 2015, validating the concept and providing the momentum to move forward as a real business.
Sustained Operations
The company made sales, competed for and won smaller funding opportunities along the way, and brought on an intern for a year to support operations. BondingBox ran as a lean, self-sustaining business without venture capital through 2024.
Creative Output Over Time
The volume and range of creative work produced over the life of the company reflects what consistent, strategic design looks like in a resource-constrained environment. From the initial brand identity through game design, ecommerce, and social media campaigns, every piece was built to serve the business and its customers.
DateBuilder
The BondingBox product line grew to include DateBuilder, an outrageous date creation card game that carried the brand’s core premise of playful quality time into a standalone product.
